Caroline takes a look at the nation’s favourite smells…
Last week the results of a survey to find the nation’s favourite smell were revealed and unsurprisingly food figured large in the top fifty.
Freshly baked bread was the winner, with bacon not far behind. Other foodie favourites included cakes baking in the oven, Sunday roasts and fish and chips, all of which made the top ten. Lagging further behind but still in the top fifty were chocolate, coconut, doughnuts, Christmas cake, lemon, cinnamon, lime, barbecues, marzipan, cherries, cheese and biscuits, orange, popcorn and wine.
Perhaps surprisingly some of the top fifty also appeared in the list of smells which are most disliked, including cheese and barbecues. As someone who doesn’t like cheese I can sympathise with the former. After all, what can be more reminiscent of a pongy nappy than a ripe chaumes? On the other hand I can’t for the life of me think what could be objectionable about a barbecue unless perhaps you are a vegetarian.
