Pousada de Cascais: An elegant yet modern choice of hotel

Today’s blog comes from Charlotte, who reminisces about a mother and daughter break abroad…

A couple of years ago, my Mum and I fancied a girly break in the sun and, after some deliberation, we decided on Cascais, a coastal town about 30 kilometres from Lisbon in Portugal.

There are a number of hotels in Cascais that deserve attention, but we settled on the Pousada de Cascais, which occupies an enviable position close to the centre of the town.

The hotel is set within the walls of the historical fortress of the 16th century Citadel of Cascais, and represents a unique combination of old and modern. The rooms are set into the former barracks, but are designed in a chic, modern style, with spacious interiors and arty touches dotted around the public areas like the lobby.

Our room was really comfortable and spacious, with modern amenities like wi-fi and efficient air conditioning, which was needed in the heat of Cascais in early summer.

Relaxing in our hotel room

As for the hotel facilities, there’s a gym (which I can’t comment on as we were too lazy to go there!), a gorgeous swimming pool set just inside from the decking area outside (creating a sort of indoor/outdoor pool experience), a multi-level sunbathing deck, and a spa.

Perhaps the highlight for us was the breakfast! The breakfast was buffet style and the range of choices was huge. There were healthy options like fruit and cereals, but also slightly more naughty options like muffins and cheeses.

However, the highlight was the complimentary sparkling wine! I’m not usually one to hit the alcohol before lunchtime, but since we were on holiday, we relaxed the rules a little, sometimes sipping a glass of wine outside the restaurant in the early morning sun before heading off to the beach or to the town for a wander.

We didn’t try the hotel restaurant for lunch or dinner, although on one occasion did indulge in a sandwich on the sunbathing deck. The sandwich was really nicely made, with generous fillings and a nice side of crisps.

Cascais is a lovely town full of interesting things to do and one of the most fantastic ice cream shops you’ll ever come across on your travels, and the Pousada makes for the perfect accommodation option if you’re looking for somewhere stylish, peaceful, and with unbeatable views out across the harbour.

They often have promotions on, so keep an eye out for those if you’re planning your summer holiday in 2015.
