Giveaway and Review: Moonsoon Valley Wine and My Thai @ The Old Steps

My Thai. It has a reputation amongst Leeds foodies as being the most authentic Thai in town, and let’s face it there’s pretty tough competition. We hadn’t, until recently, been down there for ourselves to see what all the fuss is about, but when we were invited to sample My Thai’s Thai food alongside some wine from Thailand, we could not say no!

Wine from Thailand, I hear you cry? Yes, wine from Thailand. It does exist and it is very, very nice. Monsoon Valley Wine originates from the Hua Hin Hills vineyard near the stunning Kaeng Krachan national park (south of Bangkok). Kathrin Puff has helped to turn Monsoon Valley into the premium wine producer in Thailand and we were excited to see how the flavours of the Thai wine would complement the spice of the food.

Focusing for just a minute on the food, this is Thai at its best – the flavours were authentic (the sampler platter as a starter was so far elevated from your typical oriental starter platters that it almost didn’t deserve the same name!) and each aspect mouth-watering. The corn cake, always a favourite with us, was exceptional, as was the mieng kum (presented to us, thoughtfully, without peanuts). This one-bite experience helped to showcase what we all love about Thai cuisine.

Our meal was not to be complete without trying the Monsoon Valley wine, and we chose the rose wine to go with our mains of gra pow moo krob (wok fried pork belly cooked to perfection) and tamarind duck (delicate duck meat brought to life by a subtle sourness ). For sides, we ordered stir fried Chinese broccoli and some beautiful garlic rice, with our little one sampling rice noodles with egg and vegetables (this simple dish was so nice we had to stop ourselves from “checking it wasn’t too hot” for her)!

The Monsoon Valley wine was a delight, the sweetness perfectly complementing the tamarind sauce that accompanied the duck. We were so impressed by the quality of the wine, especially considering Thailand doesn’t have a widespread reputation as a wine-producing country.

Had our little girl allowed us, we would have happily sat back and enjoyed a whole bottle of Monsoon Valley wine, but alas her bedtime prevented us from doing so! This was, however, easily one of the best Thai meals we have enjoyed not just in Leeds, but anywhere in the UK.
